Beyond the Artwork: Grant Proposals for Artists

Writing a strong proposal is a skill—one that can be learned. Whether you’re applying for grants, awards, residencies, exhibitions, or other juried opportunities, this practical workshop offers an inside look at the application process from both the artist’s and the reviewer’s perspective.

We’ll explore how applications are evaluated, what makes a compelling project, and strategies for developing stronger applications. Participants will leave with a stronger understanding of the application process and practical insights to apply to future proposals.

About the Instructor

Katie Jakobiec is an arts professional with more than two decades of experience spanning studio art, art history, higher education, arts administration, and fund development. Throughout her academic and professional career, she has successfully secured grants, fellowships, scholarships, and other competitive funding, and has developed and written funding proposals within the nonprofit arts sector. Her experience also extends to the other side of the application process, including managing juried awards and working with selection and evaluation processes. Most recently, she managed the Robert G. Kemp Arts Award at the Blue Mountain Foundation for the Arts.
