Donna Reimer is a member of the Grey Grannies, one of about 240 "Granny Groups" across Canada that work to support the Stephen Lewis Foundation www.stephenlewisfoundation.org through its Grandmothers to Grandmothers campaign.
In May of this year she was fortunate enough to have been included in a group of 42 Canadian grandmothers who each visited one project in South Africa that receives support from the Foundation (5 different projects), and who went to Swaziland to attend the first international Grandmothers Gathering on African soil.
The gathering was organized by and for grandmothers from 13 African countries and the organizers invited the Foundation to send some Canadians to observe, assist and participate.
Attached is a photo taken at the home of Elina, a South Africa granny who we met at a project. They meet weekly with some counsellors, do beadwork for fundraising (under Elina's guidance), and, as one of the Canadian grannies put it, "heart surgery"- the mending of broken hearts- they support each other emotionally.
Before leaving for Africa, Donna began a short blog that gives a flavour of the work the Grannies undertake: http://donnaswaziblog.blogspot.com
